A dog with multiple infection by D. renale in the abdominal cavity presented granular peritonitis with giant cells phagocytizing D. renale eggs. Hepatic and phrenic serositis associated to numerous eggs of the parasite immersed in fibrinous process were observed. Lungs presented D. renale eggs in the parenchyma, mononucleated cell infiltrates, edema, hemorrhage, congestion, atelectasia, emphysema, and thromboembolism. D. renale eggs were detected inside the center-lobular veins, auricular cavities, and superficial venous bed of the heart. These findings characterized an atypical dissemination pathway of eggs in erratic cycle. |

A serological survey of Borrelia infection of dogs was performed in Sapporo, Japan, where Borrelia garinii infection in dogs was detected in 2011. A total of 314 serum samples were collected from dogs that visited three animal hospitals in Sapporo from 2012 to 2014. The two-step evaluation method, involving screening ELISA followed by Western blot analysis, was used to detect antibodies against Borrelia species. A total of 34 samples were positive by ELISA. Among those 34 samples, 32 were positive for Borrelia spp. by Western blot. These findings suggest that the 32 dogs (10.2%) generated antibodies against Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato, such as B. garinii or B. afzelii. Antibody positivity was 7.6% and 13.3% for dogs living in urban and rural areas,... |

Chondroitinase ABC (C-ABC) is expected to be a novel agent for chemonucleolysis. The effect of C-ABC was investigated by magnetic resonance (MR) and radiograph. C-ABC was administered into the lumbar intervertebral disks on the clinically normal beagles (n=5), in a dose of 50 μl (12.5 units as C-ABC). MR scans were performed pre-dose, and 1, 3, 7, 14 and 28 days after administration of C-ABC, and the signal intensity (SI) of the nucleus pulposus was measured. Radiographs were taken pre-dose, and 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 14 and 28 days post-dose, to evaluate narrowing of the disk space in terms of height index (HI). In addition, the quantity of the chondroitin sulfate (CS) and the hyaluronic acid (HA) in the nucleus pulposus were measured by high performance... |

Neospora caninum infection is an important disease affecting bovine and canine populations worldwide. The dense granule antigen 7 of N. caninum (NcGRA7) is considered to be an immunodominant antigen. In the present study, the gene encoding truncated NcGRA7 (NcGRA7t) lacking an N-terminal signal peptide was expressed in Escherichia coli, and its diagnostic potential in an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was evaluated. The ELISA could clearly discriminate between known N. caninum-positive and -negative sera from dogs. Serum samples randomly collected from dogs in Japan and China were examined for the diagnosis of neosporosis using the ELISA. Twenty-three of 135 samples (17.03%) and 9 of 95 (9.47%) samples from Japan and China, respectively, were... |

Two dogs that exhibited sudden astasia, anorexia and fever higher than 40°C were suspected of having Lyme disease in July 2011. Clinical symptoms gradually improved with antibiotic treatment in both cases. Polymerase chain reaction and sequence analysis revealed Borrelia garinii DNA fragments in the peripheral blood in the acute disease phase. Serological tests, including enzyme linked immunosorbent assay and Western blot analysis, showed an increased IgG antibody titer against Borrelia pathogens in one of the dogs. These findings suggested that diagnosis of the two dogs was Lyme disease related to B. garinii infection. |

Peroxiredoxins (Prxs) are a family of antioxidant enzymes. Here, we cloned a 2-Cys Prx, BgTPx-1, from the canine Babesia parasite B. gibsoni. Sequence identity between BgTPx-1 and 2-Cys Prx of B. bovis was 81% at the amino acid level. Enzyme activity assay by using recombinant BgTPx-1 (rBgTPx-1) indicated that BgTPx-1 has antioxidant activity. Antiserum from a mouse immunized with rBgTPx-1 reacted with parasite lysates and detect a protein with a monomeric size of 22 kDa and also a 44 kDa protein, which might be an inefficiently reduced dimer. BgTPx-1 was expressed in the cytoplasm of B. gibsoni merozoites. These results suggest that the BgTPx-1 may play a role to control redox balance in the cytoplasm of B. gibsoni. |

The cryopreservation of ovarian tissues is a technology with significant potential for the preservation of the genetic resource materials of working dogs, including guide dogs for the blind. However, no attempt has been reported on cryopreservation of the canine ovary. Thus, we evaluated a vitrification method for cryopreservation of canine ovaries and determined the potential functionality of vitrified-warmed canine ovaries by means of transplantation into non-obese diabetic-severe combined immunodeficiency (NOD-SCID) mice. All ovarian tissues cryopreserved by vitrification were morphologically normal in terms of histology. Cryopreserved ovaries were transplanted into the ovarian bursa of the NOD-SCID mice, and the xenografts were recovered from 23 of 23... |

Depth-width ratio (D/W) is the only quantitative item in the criteria recommended by the Japanese Ultrasound Society for the evaluation of breast tumors in humans. However, the usefulness of the D/W has not been evaluated in dogs. Eighty-six mammary masses in 34 female dogs underwent ultrasonographic examination to determine the D/W and other characteristics. Results of ultrasonographic and histopathologic examinations were compared. The D/W of malignant tumors was significantly greater than that of benign tumors, and it had a sensitivity of 56.3% and a specificity of 92.9% for the diagnosis of malignancy when the threshold of D/W was 0.7. In addition, irregular margin, polymorphous shape and heterogeneous internal echographic characteristics were... |

The effect of intraperitoneal administration of desialylated erythropoietin (asialo EPO) on the follicular reserve of cryopreserved canine ovarian tissues was examined using non obese diabetic-severe combined immunodeficient (NOD-SCID) mice was examined. Vitrified-warmed canine ovarian tissues were placed under the dorsal skin of mice, and were then treated with saline or 400 or 4,000 U/kg/day of asialo EPO by intraperitoneal injection from one day before transplantation for 5 days. Transplanted tissues were removed and subjected to a histological examination 4 weeks after the transplantation. Without asialo EPO treatment, the mean number of primordial follicles in the cryopreserved ovarian tissues had decreased from 4.3/mm2 to 0.2/mm2 at 4 weeks after... |

Most anesthetics have an immuno-suppressive effect on cellular and neurohumoral immunity, and research shows that total intravenous anesthesia (TIVA) with propofol has a greater immuno-protective effect than inhalational anesthesia in human medicine. However, in veterinary clinics, these effects remain ambiguous. To clarify the details, we focused on propofol and isoflurane, investigating clinical blood hematology and immunological profiles drawn from healthy dogs under and after two anesthesia techniques. Twelve healthy adult beagles were included in this study, randomly assigned to the propofol anesthesia group (group P: n=6) or the isoflurane anesthesia group (group I: n=6). In both groups, the number of lymphocytes in peripheral blood decreased after 2... |

The effect of cryopreservation and subsequent xenotransplantation on the follicular reserve of the canine ovary by using non obese diabetic-severe combined immunodeficient (NOD-SCID) mice was examined. Vitrified-warmed canine ovarian tissues were placed into the ovarian bursa of mice, and then were removed and subjected to histological examination at 4 weeks after the transplantation. Over 30% of primordial follicles and 65% of early primary follicles survived after cryopreservation. However, regardless of breed or age, percentages of survived primordial follicles and early primary follicles after the transplantation ranged from 0-7% and from 0-15%, respectively. These results indicate that the majority of primordial follicles and early primary follicles... |

Due to the recent outbreak of avian influenza, transportation of frozen canine semen with egg yolk has been sharply restricted. Thus, there is urgent need to develop a novel egg yolk-free extender for freezing canine spermatozoa. In the present study, the effect of using skim milk/glucose (SG)-based extender without egg yolk on the motility and fertilizing capacity of canine spermatozoa frozen-thawed in the presence of glycerol was examined. There was a tendency for the proportion of motile spermatozoa exposed to SG-based extender for 3 h to be higher than that exposed for 1 h, but the difference was not significant. The motility and other viability parameters of canine spermatozoa after thawing were similar to those obtained with an egg yolk-based... |

Healthy animals normally eat sufficient food to satisfy their energy requirements. It is one of the jobs of the nutritionist to ensure that all other nutrient needs have been met when animals stop eating because they have met their energy needs. While dogs and cats are members of the biological order Carnivora, scientific observation and research support that differences in their metabolism and nutritional requirements exist. However, the goal in feeding both species is the same; to optimize the health and well-being of the individual. This approach results in dietary recommendations that will vary from individual animal to animal, based on a variety of factors that include the animal's signalment, occupation and environment. Feeding approaches vary... |

This review covers methods that have been applied to study the nutrient value or quality of specific ingredients fed to dogs, cats and comparable species (i.e. foxes, minks, rats, etc.). Typically, the nutritional value or utilization of a specific ingredient is measured by total tract digestibility and has been expanded through the measurement of total nutrient balance (i.e. nitrogen or energy). However, to better understand digestion it is necessary to obtain a more accurate measurement of nutrients entering and leaving the small intestine. Accurate measurement of small intestinal digestion is crucial in dogs and cats because nutrient digestion and absorption occurs primarily in the small intestine. Measuring small intestinal digestibility requires... |

In dogs, mast cell tumor is one of the most frequent malignancies, whose cutaneous presentation achieve levels of 11%. The present paper review the available literature of canine cutaneous mast cell tumor discussing it’s incidence, etiology, clinical presentation, clinical stage, diagnosis, treatment and prognosis. In spite of the actual advances in the diagnosis and treatment, of this pathology it’s prognosis is very uncertain because the clinical, biological behavior and treatment responses are so variable. |
